THE TAFT STORY Taft's sleep apnea was related to his weight. Just under six feet tall, he weighed pounds in college. He was then healthy. Signs of sleepiness and sleep apnea appeared in his 40s, as his weight neared pounds. For example, he slept through a thunderous typhoon in the Philippines, despite terrified pleadings from his wife. I watched the interview on CSPAN of Jeffrey Rosen discussing his new book “William Howard Taft: The 27th President ”. It is the newest title in The American President Series. Rosen discussed the challenge he faced in staying within the Series’ guidelines of a concise short book.

The book itself is physically large, though Taft is largest of all, filling up his spacious bathroom with his voluminous body and endless cacophony. Kids will enjoy the humor and energy in this story and be intrigued by the notion that presidents are people, too.   From to , Jaffray was the chief housekeeper for four presidents — William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. This book ended pages too soon. I wasn't full of the story. I wanted more. More about black bar owner John Nickle, his ex-wife Marion, and his son Franklin.

More about Fay Taft, a year-old waitress who comes to work for John and Carl, her good-for-nothing brother. Does John ever take up drumming again. Does he teach Franklin?/5(). Taft is not a bad book by any means, but it wasn't my favorite. I really didn't care about Carl and Fay and I couldn't get into the imaginary memories of Taft and his family.

I liked what I considered the main story line about John Nickel and would have liked more about him/5. "Whites most memorable achievement was the monumental biography of Senator Robert A. Taft by Ann Patchett tells the story of two Tennessee fathers: John Nickel and Levon Taft. These fathers are the head of households that are broken by pride, betrayal, and unspoken fears and hopes.

The novel shows that beyond race and economic status, all families face the same challenges. John Nickel is the manager of Muddy's Bar in Memphis. Roosevelt ran anyway, and Taft finished a poor third in a three-way race, but the story had a happy ending when President Warren Harding appointed him Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in where he did an outstanding job.A legal scholar, Rosen sympathizes with Taft's strict constitutionalism more than many readers will, but he makes a Brand: Tantor Media, Inc.

Taft is the story of John Nickel, a black ex-musician who wanted nothing more than to be a good father. But his son is taken away from him and he is left with nothing but the Memphis bar he manages.

When he hires a young white waitress named Fay Taft, he doesn't know that he is taking on her desperate brother, Carl, as well.

His wife constantly pushed him to live up to his “full potential” and Theodore Roosevelt, seeking a worthy successor, failed to appreciate that he didn’t have the necessary dose of enthusiasm. The article appears to be an expanded version of the newspaper story and it detailed how Taft dealt with bathtub-size problems: He used a shower.

The common story, often repeated, is that Taft got stuck in the existing White House tub and a new one was installed, and the four men in the photos were the bathtub installers.
