Fairy Book, The Red Fairy Book. The heroine of "Fitcher's Bird," like Clever Brother Hare, is a perverse self-creation, and, like him, she is smart, a dandy, and a trick-ster. The transvestism that finally saves her, and results in the demise of evil and patriarchy, is her disguise as a bird - a fantastic bird, a possibly androgynous bird. This is a straight up rendition of Fitcher's Bird, from the brothers Grimm, but illustrated with photographs by Cindy Sherman. Now, I have to say right from the beginning, dolls are creepy enough as it is. Juxtaposed with this Bluebeard variant, this book hits my goosebumps button.
